Casino will be celebrating 100 years since Australia’s first sanctioned air mail flight on Friday 26 June at Casino Aerodrome, with a Gipsy Moth plane flying mail from Lismore and arriving in Casino at approximately 12:30pm.
The first flight took place on Saturday June 26, 1920, when pilot Frank Roberts took off in an AVRO 540K plane from a cow paddock in Lismore, flying to Casino then Tenterfield. The plane carried 8,000 letters which were then sent to Sydney from Tenterfield by train.
A re-creation of the Air Mail Flight will take place flying from Lismore to Casino and on to Tenterfield.
Casino residents have the opportunity to purchase a commemorative envelope at Casino Post Office for $1.35 and write a historic letter to a friend. Post the letter by Wednesday 24 June and it will be sent on a 1920’s Gipsy Moth Plane.
Spectators in Casino can access the aerodrome grounds via Neville Bienke Memorial Drive. Due to COVID-19, spectators will be asked to remain in their vehicles whilst on site.
