Last Updated: 03 June 2026

Swap the concrete jungle for wide-open spaces. Whether you are navigating pristine river loops in a kayak, driving onto uncrowded beaches, or camping under a blanket of stars, your next great outdoor adventure is waiting.

1. Paddle the Scenic River Loops

The Richmond Valley is deeply defined by its pristine waterways, offering an absolute paradise for kayakers, canoeists, and stand-up paddleboarders. Navigate the peaceful, shaded reaches of the river right in Casino, explore the broad, historic junctions at Coraki and Woodburn, or glide through the quiet, mangrove-lined canals of Broadwater and Evans Head. Insider Tip:

Keep a sharp eye on the riverbanks early in the morning—you will often spot water dragons sunning themselves on the rocks or majestic sea eagles launching from the canopy.

2. Hit the Sand on Airforce Beach

Experience the ultimate freedom of beach driving. Airforce Beach stretches out across kilometres of magnificent, unspoilt coastline. It’s a popular haven for local 4WD enthusiasts, beach fishers, and families looking for a massive slice of sand to call their own for the day.

Insider Tip:

This beach is dog-friendly, making it the perfect spot to let the family pet run wild. Ensure you check the local tides before hitting the sand!

3. Step into Nature on the Northern Rivers Rail Trail

Swap the highway for a peaceful, traffic-free journey winding through the heart of our beautiful grazing country. The newly completed Casino-to-Lismore section of the Rail Trail is almost entirely flat, fully surfaced, and custom-built for walkers, runners, cyclists, and families looking for an immersive nature stroll.

Insider Tip:

Look closely as you pass over Naughtons Gap—the historic old brick tunnel area is an official, protected sanctuary for a colony of rare, fascinating microbats!

4. Camp Under the Stars at Riverside & Coastal Sites

Unplug from the digital world and pitch a tent right next to nature. From premium, family-friendly holiday parks perched right on the edge of our river estuaies to quiet, rustic bush camping spots tucked back along our rolling country riverbanks, we offer the perfect canvas for your next overnight escape.

Insider Tip:

Our riverside camping grounds are legendary among local anglers—throw a line straight from your campsite at dawn for your best chance at hooking a fresh catch.

5. Walk the Wilderness Tracks at Dirawong Reserve

Discover dramatic coastal vistas, sacred Aboriginal cultural sites, and untouched clifftops extending across spectacular ocean headlands at Evans Head. The walking tracks through Dirawong Reserve guide you through pristine coastal bushland with panoramic ocean vistas at every turn.

Insider Tip:

If you are visiting between June and November, pack a pair of binoculars. These high cliff heads act as the community’s natural grandstand for spotting humpback whales migrating right past the coast.
